About HoyaHoya

The HoyaHoya difference

We are an unashamedly small, specialist hoya business.  We are passionate about hoya and helping others to grow beautiful hoya collections.  This isn’t about money for us (although we do need to cover our costs to be a sustainable business), it’s about sharing the love and joy of growing and collecting hoya in NZ.

So what can you expect when you purchase a hoya from HoyaHoya?

A quality hoya plant that has been grown from excellent genetic stock.

  • The same genetic stock that’s in our personal hoya collection – for some of our species, we have been the first to flower them in NZ

  • Weaker genetic stock and poor performers are actively identified and excluded from our growing stock plants

A hoya that has provenance in NZ and is not illegally imported (& a threat to our biosecurity, native forests and economy).

  • We research carefully where our hoyas have originated from and can generally trace our hoya stock back many, many years. We ask difficult questions when considering purchasing new hoya stock for our collection (& to perhaps later share) as we want to be sure of provenance and that we’re not going to harm NZ’s beautiful native flora and fauna.

  • We have been fortunate to have access to some beautiful older collections in NZ to grow our own collection – hoya that are not traded regularly in NZ

  • While there are some stunning hoya overseas that we would love to add to our collection & share with others, we don’t support illegal hoya importing.

Planted in a potting medium that is perfect for your particular hoya

  • We grow our hoya in a high quality, hoya specific substrate. There is no need to repot your hoya on arrival to replace the substrate (like you might have to do with plants from retailers) – your hoya has everything it needs already. We don’t believe that hoya substrate needs to be some “secret” recipe! (this isn’t the hoya Olympics, we all just want to grow beautiful hoya). We love Bioleaf Hoya mix and then add additional perlite, fern fibre, and leca (hydroton) in the proportions that best suit each individual hoya.

  • Any delicate or rare hoya is planted in a clear nursery pot to help you check on its root health

Has had the best possible start in life

  • Cuttings are only taken from healthy, beautiful hoya

  • We propagate our hoya using the best method for each individual hoya species

  • We provide rooting support and use microbials & fertilisers to get your hoya off to the best possible start

Free of pests and diseases

  • We like to keep the use of chemicals in our nursery to a minimum but there are certain pests and diseases that Hoya are prone to (yes – looking at you, evil mealie bug) and require active attention & treatment

  • We are qualified to apply hoya appropriate agri-chemicals and do this without causing environmental harm

  • We happily provide advice and support for collectors that might be having trouble with pests and diseases in their collection and will share recommendations for treatment. We’ve even been known to nurse the odd hoya back to health for a collector that’s struggling.

Sustainability

  • We continue to embrace sustainability practices and make better choices

  • We use agrichemicals sparingly and take extra care looking out for our precious bees

  • If we have ‘used’ packaging that is strong, we will re-use it as part of your packing materials. But not if it’s not able to withstand drops and bumps from the courier. We want your hoya to arrive in perfect condition.

  • We pack using recycled materials and eco-wool which keeps your hoya warm during winter transport and cool during the summer months.

Shipping and packing

  • We only send our Hoya on Mondays (and occasionally Tuesdays if the courier network is humming). We send non-hoya stock on any weekday.

  • We provide tracking details to purchasers and if something goes wrong, we don’t expect you to do the chasing.

  • Shipping charges in NZ are high – please be assured that we’re not making any $ out of our shipping rates. We ship as cheaply as possible using courier companies that we trust.

Follow up help and support – trouble-shooting

  • Every hoya purchased also comes with an individualised information and care guide. We share what we and other experienced collectors have learnt from growing your specific hoya. Think of it as having your very own hoya coach for the hoya you’ve purchased.

  • We want everyone to have a beautiful hoya collection. We all have challenges with our hoya collections and if you’re having some, we are here for follow up help and support.

  • We haven’t had many of our customers need help for hoya that they have purchased from us. We think this is because of our focus on hoya quality and the information & care guide sheets we provide with each hoya. But we’re here if you do (& have even been known to occasionally replace hoya that weren’t even purchased from us because we know how heart-breaking it is to have a hoya death in the family…)

  • And, it almost goes without saying…. we stand behind every hoya we sell.

What about our non-hoya products?

  • We only sell hoya products that we love and use in our own hoya collection

  • We have done all the hard work, running pilots and experiments on more substrates, fertilisers, rooting supports, microbials than we care to admit to

  • It has taken us years to build the collection of substrates, fertilisers and rooting supports that we think perform best for the hoya varieties in NZ

  • You can trust that if we’re selling it, it’s only because we think it will make a genuine, visible difference to your hoya collection. So yes, we stand behind every non-hoya product we sell too.

Happy hoya’ing

Our Story

Kia ora tātou from Luna and her team at HoyaHoya.

We’re a Hoya loving Kiwi family, based in Porirua.  A Japanese friend inspired our name, HoyaHoya (ほやほや), meaning ‘new’ and ‘fresh’.  And it works pretty well for us too because we also collect, and occasionally share, rare Hoya.

HoyaHoya is our ‘new’ beginning.  A chance to share our love and knowledge of Hoya with others.

For any indoor-plant lover, whether they be a veteran or a newbie, the indoor plant universe is huge, and even daunting, at times.  New products and plant varieties demand your dollar – but what will you get the best results?

HoyaHoya are here to help with the plants and products that deserve your dollar.  The ones that will give you the best results and bring joy to your plant family.

We hope you’ll join us on the HoyaHoya journey and learn something ‘new’ or ‘fresh’ along the way too.

Love Luna & Raffi (and Matt & K-J)
